All in all, 3D Dot Game Heroes is shaping up to be something quite special. Hopefully, the relative simplicity of the early stages will ramp up considerably - we're all for retro gaming experiences provided there's enough of a challenge to get stuck into. Puzzles are of the 'find a key' variety, with some block pushing thrown in for good measure. Of course, the reverse is also true and as you regain health, you regain your sword stats too. As your health depletes, so does the size and power of your sword, making you more vulnerable while enemies become more difficult to fight. One of our favourite touches to the combat system is the way your fighting ability is affected by your health. We even got a glimpse of one of the game's boss battles - a delightfully retro fight and chase scenario against a giant snake. Just as you start to relax into a familiar pattern of wait 'n' hit though, things get more complicated with the introduction of jumping and flying foes. Enemies run toward you in straight lines from all sides and, once they get in range, you simply take a swing at them with your sword. On the subject of combat, 3D Dot Game Heroes' fighting system is simple, yet effective.

Everything is paid for with gold, which is picked up after killing foes or found in chests scattered throughout levels.
3D DOT GAME HEROES LINK UPGRADE
Take the simple weapon upgrade system: when in a blacksmith's shop, you're asked if you want to increase the 'strength', 'girth' or 'size' of your (increasingly massive) sword (it's nice to know game developers get junk e-mails, too). Even classic RPG staples can't escape From Software's sense of humour. You can even chat to the local cat, which should give you some idea of how seriously the game takes itself. YES NO During our demo, our time in the village saw us speaking to several of its inhabitants some pointed us in the direction of shops and buildings, while others gave hints and tips. This may not sound particularly thrilling, but conversations (text-only, naturally) are genuinely witty, with plenty of self-referential humour being the order of the day.

The experience won't change much between the characters: they all have the same weapons, missions and stats. For instance, despite a choice of four character classes - Hero, Prince, Princess and Scholar - you're always charged with the same mission: to protect the Kingdom of Dotnia by collecting orbs scattered around the world. Single button presses for most actions are the order of the day, with ne'er a combo in sight during our playtime - it's very much a Zelda-like action RPG in that respect and refreshing in its unfussiness. Of course, the flipside to 3D Dot Game Heroes is that, devoid of a decade's worth of RPG baggage, it's a remarkably accessible game. It's so much of a throwback, in fact, that its simplistic structure might well infuriate anyone not in on the joke. It should be clear to anyone with even a passing interest in games of yore that it's not just the game's aesthetic that owes a lot to the 8-bit era, with the classic RPG template inspiring much of the game's core. It's all 8-bit pixel art gone 3D and it's utterly charming.

Undoubtedly, and rather obviously, the most striking thing about the game is its glorious visual style. Few people might have 3D Dot Game Heroes on their radar but that could change once people get wind of this utterly unique old-skool action/adventure/RPG. With the likes of God of War III, Heavy Rain and Gran Turismo 5 giving plenty of reasons to get excited, its easy to miss some of the console's smaller upcoming gems.
